Tonsil stones are those disgusting, annoying little white balls of mucous, sulphur and other nasty materials that can be found in the back of your throat. Usually you rid your self of them by coughing them up or swallowing them. For the most part, they are harmless.
Methods for removal
There are several ways to remove stubborn tonsil stones. Many are able to simply scrape them out with their finger and discard them. I however, am not. I tried using my finger for several hour before finally giving up. I just couldn’t get past the gag reflex. I thought it would be easier to use a cotton swab and gave it a try. Still, I was fighting the gag reflex. It was not until I bought a water pik, also known as a dental irrigation system that I had any success getting rid of them. A water pik is a device that sprays water at varying pressures into your mouth usually for cleaning in between teeth.
Using the water pik on the lowest pressure setting, I cautiously sprayed the back of my throat near the tonsil stone. It was surprisingly simple to dislodge the stone. This method worked for me and I hope you have success with it as well.

I hate hate hate hate these things. This is the 3rd or 4th time I have visited this website hoping someone will have a miracle cure. I tried the Netti Pot for awhile and it did seem to work a little bit. I think I might order the waterpik too, maybe the combination will work. I have noticed the correlation with dairy as well. I can literally fell the mucus in the back of my throat thicken when I drink a glass of milk. My husband can smell them on me too, gross. The crazy thing is about a year ago he too started to get them and now I smell that same awful smell on him as well- It makes me wonder if the type of bacteria they come from is contagious???? I guess I will just stick with the q-tip method for now- I chew sugar free gum all day long to try and mask it- ugh I hate these things!!!
ATTENTION: Use a waterpik to get rid of these anybody who deosnt know what that is just look it up, youd be amazed how much junk comes out of your teeth even after you have brushed. My stones came back after my pik broke.
Have found your posts very interesting, thanks.
One thing I find always produces tonsil stones is eating almonds. Perhaps it is something to do with getting small pieces lodged in your tonsil crevices. Sometimes get the same result from other nuts as well.
I now steer clear of all nuts unless in the form of nut butter. It hasn’t entirely gotten rid of the tonsil stones, but they aren’t nearly so bad now.
Good luck to you!
I first got these in 1996 when I was 15, right after I contracted strep throat. Now I’m 27 (will be 28 in July 2009) and I still get them! A few months ago I somehow coughed out a large one, almost the size of a jellybean. These things (tonsil stones or tonsiliths) are outright disgusting!
ive had these for about two years and after trying everything (except Dr. Katz treatment) i found out that if you drink 6-8 glasses of water per day then you are less likely to develop these. Who knew that something so simple could help out so much.
Try the Dr. Katz Remedy here.
