I have tonsiliths too……….disgusting!!! I recently purchased a waterpik, but instead of shooting and irrigating the tonsil stones, I use the curved, rounded end to squeeze it out by pressing on the soft palate downwards thereby pushing the stones out. I tell you, a lot of it came out. I can say all of it came out on one side. I hope this can be of help to other people. Now I can talk a little closer to other people :)

I really believe that the neti pot works and helps prevent stones! Most of us who get stones also have issues with tonsilitis, sinus issues, post nasal drip, etc. This thing is awesome and I can breathe so much better! Check it out!

I’m 41 and just started having tonsil “pockets” and stones last summer.Since then I have had many days with a flashlite in one hand and a q-tip in the other. ENT doc says I’m too old to remove tonsils.I’m only gonna get older and tonsils may even get worse than they are.Have you heard of anyone in their 40′s having a tonsilectomy?

  • 4. Esster  |  January 26th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

    Nancy,
The ENT I talked to before my tonsilletomy said a lot of old school doctors won’t take out tonsils because the recovery time is longer, and there is a slight increased possibility of infection. I had my tonsillectomy and uvulaectomy when I was 31–it was the best thing I have done. No more tonsil stones, no more bad breath, no more sore throats, and no more illness!

A bobby pin has been my perfect solution for decades. I just dip it in rubbing alcohol for sterilization and insert into the hole that contains the stone. The little loop at the end of the bobby pin collects the stone and out it comes. Sometimes it required a few scrapes. All fixed!

Regarding tonsillectomy surgery on older people, my brother had chronic sleep problems. His tonsils were large, and the ENT guy he saw suggested removing tonsils and uvula. My brother was about 40 at the time. He was off work for a week recovering. Since then, his sleep has improved somewhat, but he now has a very quick and heightened gag reflex.

I’m here because I’ve had tonsil stones since I was 12, on and off for 35 years. The first one popped out in Spanish class in 7th grade. I made the mistake of biting it! I seem to have periods when I have them frequently for a month or two, then nothing for a year. I hate that “feeling” at the back of my tongue, letting me know there’s something back there. Off to the bathroom with a flashlight.

If Steven Colbert can launch his “Wrist Strong” campaign, why can’t we, as tonsil stone suffers, have a wristband, too. TonsilStrong?

WOW- I just found this site. firstly I’d like to say a big thank you! to the person who set up this website. I now know I’ve had tonsil stones for 6 months thinking I’ve been run down with ‘spots’ on my tonsils. I’ve just spent the last 2 days cleaning my large and scarred tonsils (from lots of tonsilitus infection as a child). None of my friends still have their tonsils and can’t relate. It’s great to see the power of the web in action – and gives me hope we can move from fixing tonsil stones to ousting governments and improving the environment.

I’m now on a mission to find a natural remedy to this problem. In the meantime I’m finding q-tips, antiseptic mouthwash and gargling with salt water is helping. I’d rather not have surgery as I’m 36 but I’ve also read that those who’ve had them out no longer suffer this problem. Will definitely be using the neti pot and himalayan rock salt. Thank you everybody!!

I just had my tonsils out in February! I’m 41.

Anyone had a tonsillectomy using the PITA method? How about LTA? Or Thermal Welding? I really want mine out. 10 probably 15 years with these smelly white nasty things, halitosis, and tonsils the size of my thumb. Although, wikipedia has a nasty picture of some abnormally large tonsils that are much worse. Bleah…

Fortunately I’m quite inventive, and after my first child started getting sick (6 years ago), and we got those baby syringes, I took one, curved it using a flame, attached it to a water source, and started flushing them out that way. This was before I had found any information about this on the net. Now I use a cheap oral irrigator. Not very convenient for taking on trips however, where the problem usually gets worse due to lower fluid intake, lack of sleep, etc.

Anyhow, check out wikipedia if you’re looking to have tonsils or adenoids out, great info on all the procedures. BTW, did you know tonsilloliths can occur in the adenoids too?

just to let everyone know, Tonsilstones.com is just a plug for therabreath – It’s registered in WHOIS by therabreath.com. haha, those devious bastards.

I’ve suffering for a long time (probably over 10 years). First it started with tonsil stones. Then, post nasal dripping. Since Setp of last year, I’ve been coughing constantly. After suffering enough, I did an extensive research and finally found some cures. Oil of oregano & Oil Pulling. I don’t know which one works but I am trying both just in case. I am 100% positive Tonsil Stones are results of post nasal drippping. And PND is result of bad immune system. After trying them both only for 3 days, my coughing finally stopped and bad breath is gone as well.
    Good luck!

young–any long-term progress? are you still free of the stones and bad breath?

  • 15. joyce  |  June 27th, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I have had these stones for years. I have had a temperature of around 99.8 to 100 degrees almost every day for over two years and nothing seems to explain it. Could it be from the tonsil problem?

I have been troubled with these nasty little boogers for some time. Your site has some good information. One story I read here incicated a good way to get rid of them was to use a water pik to blast them out. It has worked like a charm for me.

Heya, I was wondering if you could add my site to your list. tonsilstones.com is actually MADE by therabreath, but my site http://www.tonsil-help.com actually does reviews of all the popular tonsil stones products and gives a rating that’s 100% visitor rated!

There is a very important aspect of tonsil stones that I have not seen mentioned anywhere. Medical science is well aware that periodontal disease and other inflammations in the body can result in heart disease, Alzheimer’s, etc. Tonsil stones result in chronic tonsillitis which is an inflammation of the tonsils. Could tonsil stones also lead to heart disease? I think this should be addressed very seriously.

Hello, Thanks for very interesting article. I really enjoyed reading all of your articles. It’s interesting to read ideas and observations from someone else’s point of view… makes you think more. Keep up the good work. Greetings,

David, would you consider selling your website? I’d be interested in buying it, I’m interested in purchasing existing tonsillar – related websites. PS: I sent you a message on the forum too, can’t find a way to contact you! =]

How can you get rid of stones you can’t see but you can feel them? The smell is there, but I can’t see them to remove them. I can definitely feel them and once in a while, one will come out but I can’t get rid of them all if I can’t see them. Is there a way to remove them if you can’t see them?

So I have had tonsil stones since a two year bout with strep throat that created scar tissue. I have found three things that help greatly.
    1) Netty Pot in the morning and night. It helps with post nasal drip and flushing bacteria out of the sinus cavities.
    2) Taking Zyrtec, also helps with post nasal drip.
    3) Flonase, prescibed by doc, helps open sinus cavities to drain out of nose instead of draining down back of the throat.
    4) Special pointed q-tips used for makeup removal, works great when dipped in hydrogen peroxide. Push below tonsil stone, it will pop out. Then put q-tip inside the crater left and it helps kill remaining bacteria. It will also bring more of the stones to the surface.
Hope this helps seeing most md’s automatically assume you have strep even if the test shows up negative they will keep putting you on anti-biotics, instead of preventing the stones themselves.

over 20 years ago, it seems i got ‘thrush’ [oral yeast infection] by performing cunnilingus [my partner apparently had candida, nuff said]. I’ve had white tongue ever since, off and on [i brush my tongue, but can't get back far enuf...]. I often have ‘white, cheesy subtance’ come out of my tonsils. Doctors have called this ‘acute follicular tonsilitis’ . Today i saw a reference [in Playboy!] to ‘putrid tonsils’ [someone asked about their halitosis] which sent me to the web and [after most searches pointed to the tonsilstones.com shill site] here. THANKS! the only thing i didn’t see here was the suggestion of using a q-tip on them. I have a bulb syringe for ear wax removal and i’m gonna try flushing with warm salt water. What about hydrogen peroxide? I can’t afford a tonsillectomy, i live in USA, no health insurance either.

My tonsil stones seem to appear after a day at the ball park (when I’ve eaten a lot of sunflower seeds). Anyone else.

Here’s another site you may want to include on this page. It has pages and pages of discussion from tonsil stone sufferers.

    does oil pulling work?

  • 26. Karen  |  August 31st, 2010 at 7:44 pm

LOL. Here is an item that came up when I ran a search for tonsil stones:

    “Keep Yourself Kissable. Choose Tonsilstones!”

I do have a Neti-pot at home. I’ll have to use it more consistently and see if it keeps the stones at bay. I get some pretty big stones that make me gag and make swallowing uncomfortable. I’ve been getting them for nearly 20 years. I didn’t know what they were until recently, but it seems they started appearing soon after a severe bout of tonsilitis.
